Scope note: Fármacos que inhiben las colinesterasas. El neurotransmisor ACETILCOLINA es hidrolizado rápidamente por estas enzimas y, en consecuencia, es inactivado. Cuando se inhiben las colinesterasas, se potencia la acción de la acetilcolina liberada endógenamente en las sinapsis colinérgicas. Los inhibidores de la colinesterasas se usan mucho clínicamente porque potencian los impulsos colinérgicos destinados al tubo digestivo y la vejiga urinaria, los ojos y los músculos esqueléticos. También se usan por sus efectos en el corazón y en el sistema nervioso central.
